2014 Music from Taiwan Fundraising Concert-Autumn

Following the success of their sell-out Spring concert of Taiwanese folk music, the Push Hands team is organising another fundraising concert. Once again it will feature a selection of popular Taiwanese folk music, performed by seven talented, young musicians from Taiwan (click to find out more about the musicians) who, despite their youth, have already played in concert venues around the world. The Autumn concert will also include a collection of ‘campus folk songs’, which originated among students at local colleges and universities in Taiwan in the 1970s. "

Taiwanese boasts a rich cultural heritage that includes a well-established tradition of folk music. This Autumn concert will feature a programme of songs from the decade when Taiwan was experiencing a period of rapid social change (click for detail of the programme) . The evocative local music of this era supported the Taiwanese people through a time of turbulence and confusion, inspiring them and encouraging them to remain hopeful and stay authentic. While, the campus folk songs movement can be seen as reflecting a time when Taiwan’s youth were attempting to assert their own distinct cultural identity by creating their own music and accompanied themselves with acoustic guitars and pianos."

"
The Autumn concert will be held at the Leighton House Museum, London, on Friday October 3, 2014 at 7.15pm. On this occasion proceeds from the event will support Hammersmith Community Gardens Association (HCGA), a local environmental charity who manages community gardens in Hammersmith and Fulham. HCGA has a range of projects which include conservation training schemes, volunteer gardening sessions, environmental play schemes and environmental education in local schools." Please visit their webiste (http://hcga.org.uk) to find out more for the charity.

In the end, we have raised nearly three thousand pounds and donated to Hammersmith Community Gardens Association (HCGA).

“Push Hands is a group of young Taiwanese living and working in the UK, who have come together under the banner of Push Hands, whose marvellous slogan is “Every push and every hand counts.”  They plan to use a combination of cultural, social and sporting events to raise funds for selected charities, and tonight’s concert is their first venture. I am thrilled that the first charity to benefit from their generosity is the Myriad Centre in the centre of Worcester. ”
